Bringing Safe Water to Walewale Girls Model School

For nearly a decade, pupils at Walewale Girls Model School lived with a major challenge: the school had no reliable water supply since its establishment in 2016. This situation affected not only teaching and learning but also the girls’ ability to maintain proper hygiene, particularly during menstruation. Through its Economic and Social Justice Program (ECOSOC), with funding support from the Vibrant Village Foundation (VVF), Peace for Life Ghana (PLG) has supported the school by connecting it to the West Mamprusi Community Water and Sanitation System and providing a water storage tank to strengthen access to water within the school.

The intervention is already making a meaningful difference. With a current school population of 151 pupils, the girls now have improved access to water for drinking, handwashing, cleaning and other essential hygiene needs. Importantly, the intervention has also contributed to improved menstrual hygiene management among the girls. Reliable access to water enables girls to manage their menstrual hygiene with greater dignity, privacy and confidence, helping to create a healthier and more supportive learning environment. This initiative demonstrates that access to water is more than an infrastructure need. It is an investment in health, dignity, education and the wellbeing of girls.
